Development of UVBuster


UVBuster was developed by Farmroid Co., Ltd. Japan under the industry-academia-government collaboration in Itabashi Ward. The R&D work was carried out at Product Development R & D Collaboration Centre, Itabashi Ward (a facility where the ward supports the R&D of companies and helps in the revitalization of manufacturing companies).

Ray of Hope: Counter Measure for Corona

Farmroid started its research to develop UVBuster for sterilization of crop viruses. In 2019, during the COVID-19 pandemic, realised the importance of UVC light sources against the inactivation of SARS-CoV-2. Many research institutes in Japan and many other countries have confirmed the inactivation of SARS-CoV-2 by deep ultraviolet rays. However, Farmroid was the first in Japan to demonstrate the UV Irradiation test against SARS-CoV-2, using UVBuster (self-controlled motion robot emitting DUV).

UVBuster Features

UVBuster is designed with self-controlled and remote-controlled motion. It controls itself from a remote location by using the WEB control function, recognizing walls, screens, etc. It can also be operated from the home PC via net using 5G technology. An additional feature of UVBuster is the variable arm making an angle of 30°,45°,60°,90°, to irradiate the maximum visible areas of interest.

Post Development

On May 28, 2020, the UV Irradiation test by UVBuster was conducted at Corona Examination Laboratory of Itabashi Hospital, Nihon University School of Medicine, and decrease in the titter counts of SARS-CoV-2 was confirmed.

Why UVBuster? End-user benefits

The main purpose is to find its sterilizing effect on the emerging coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2) and some new variants of coronavirus, which brought a drastic change in socioeconomic and health sectors across the world. One must understand that the sterilization by UVBuster is a physical sterilization method (very clean method) and there is no need of using chemicals or pharmaceutical compounds. The sterilization by UVBuster with its variable arm and self-controlled motion differentiate its capabilities from other UV irradiation robots. Because UVBuster makes the UV irradiation profile in such a way that it can reach the maximum visible areas at one shot, and such feature of UVBuster proves to be beneficial in sterilizing the public spaces.

Future Targets

  • The R&D work on the design and development of smart autonomous UV-drone equipped with safe and green UV LEDs.
  • R&D of AlGaN Far-UVC LED based UVBuster technology. Smart robot equipped with Far-UVC LED Panels for SARS-CoV-2 applications and agricultural applications are the next milestones.
